Early life

  • Parents were both teachers
  • Youngest out of five children
  • Took after her father which was a math and physics instructor
  • Lost her mother at the age of 11 to tuberculosi

EDUCATION

  • Wasn't able to attend the men-only University of Warsaw
  • Continued education in Warsaw's "floating university" (underground, informal classes held in secret)
  • Completed master's degree in physics in 1893 and then earned degree in math in the following year

  • Continued her studies at the University of Paris in 1891 at age 24
  • Gained her Doctor of Science degree in 1903

Achievements

  • conducted pioneering research on radioactivity
  • 1st woman to win a Nobel Prize and became a professor at University of Paris

Discoveries

  • Conducted own experiments on uranium rays
  • New radioactive element in 1898 and named it polonium after Marie's native country

interesting facts

  • Throughout her life she actively promoted the use of radium to alleviate suffering during WWI
  • In 1929 she was presented with a gift of $50,000 by President Hoover
  • Wrote a book called "Recherches sur les Substances Radioactives" in 1904

She then died on July 4, 1934 due to Aplastic Anemia because of too much exposure to radiation
