The family had so much work to do, including their former mother's chores. They had to cook, clean, farm, herd, etc. Back in their time, they didnt have modern technology, so it was even harder than it would be now (obviously)

Their former mother died while giving birth, she had a medical condition that, back then, could not be treated.

This book has taught me about life in their time, simple, yet a lot of work if a family member is dead.
