Fasting during Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam. Holy Quran was also revealed in the month of Ramadan. Ramadan is the month that aims to purify the soul and bring the individual closere to Allah (SWT). Ramadan was chosen as the month of fasting.
"O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous" -- (Surat Al-Baqarah 2:183)
“Fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may attain taqwaa.” (Quran, 2:183)
"When the month of Ramadan starts, the gates of the heaven are opened and the gates of Hell are closed and the devils are chained." (Imam Bukhari)
"... whoever fasts during Ramadan out of sincere faith and hoping to attain Allah's rewards, then all his past sins will be forgiven." (Imam Bukhari).
The Messenger of Allah (saw) said: He who gives food for a fasting person to break his fast, he will receive the same reward as him, except that nothing will be reduced from the fasting persons reward."
The purpose of fasting is to develop the quality of righteousness (taqwa), inwardly and outwardly, by abstaining from sinful deeds and training ourselves to control our thoughts and desires. Fasting is a deeply spiritual practice that is meant to benefit us in body, mind, and heart. To develop and strengthen our powers of self-control, so that we can resist wrongful desires and bad habits
