REFLECTION

  • THE BOUNCING BACK OF A RAY THAT WASNT SUPPOSE TO GO THROUGH
  • Sound ex: echo
  • Light ex: waves from sun are reflected when they strike the surface of the moon

LAW OF REFLECTION

The angle of incidence equals the angle of reflection

REFRACTION

  • The bending of a wave as it passes between two substances
  • Light ex: flashlight beams as it flashes through the water
  • When the wave enters a new medium, it changes wave length & speed. the wave bends and travels in a new direction

DIFFRACTION

  • A change in the direction of a wave when the wave finds an obstacle or an edge
  • Sound ex: music around a corner of a building
  • Light ex: eclipse of the moon

INTERFERENCE

  • The combination of two to more waves that results in a single wave
  • Light ex: dark and light on a tv screen
  • Sound ex: sonic boom

INTERFERENCE

  • Constructive: when waves combine and the amplitude gets larger
  • Destructive: when two waves with the same amplitude combine by destructive interference they cancel each other out

RESONANCE

  • Makes two objects naturally vibrate at the same frequency
  • Sound ex: marimba produces notes through the resonance of air columns
