High Culture- Music

  • The music of Mexico is also rich in tradition. Music itsself has not effected business much, but the idea of keeping tradition alive while progressing has. Mariachi, the most well known type of music in Mexico, has come a long way since it's beginning. At one point, it was only men playing guitars and a harp. (2)

Music Cont.

  • A Mariachi band is now considered a folk orchestra, and women are no longer only dancers, but players. Much like music in Mexico, business has evolved that way. Mexican men and women in the business field have started their own sort of orchestra in the manufacturing and agriculture businesses around the world.

Folk Culture

  • Folk lore and religion play quite a huge part in Mexican culture. The country is known for being widely Catholic. According to a recent UNAM poll nice out of ten people in Mexico have prayed to saints or virgins for help. This also accounts for business dealings. Although there is no patron saint of business, they are still called upon for help and luck. (3)

Social Culture

  • Gender roles in Mexico were long defined as women being stay at home caretakers. Culture has since come around to women being in a place of power and, although women still face struggles of being in an "old boy's club" type society, they have made many important leaps. Mexico recently had it's first woman presidential candidate, Josefina Vasquez Mota. (4)
