PRESENTATION OUTLINE

BRIGGS VS ELLIOT

Briggs vs Elliot was a court case back in the segregation times. This case was brought to court because the black folks wanted a school bus for their children to ride to school and back but the heads of the school district declined their proposal. Then all of the African Americans got together to raise the money for the bus the district still wouldn't allow for them to ride it to and from school. The Briggs vs Elliot case was a start for desegregation in public education.

BROWN VS BOARD OF EDUCATION

Linda Brown was eight years old when she had to basically cross the city of Topeka, Kansas to get to school. All of Linda's white friends went to the public school just a few blocks away. But since the schools were "separate but equal" there really wasn't anything to be done. Linda's parents sued in federal court anyway. They argued that the treatment was not equal and that the blacks should be able to go to the public white schools. The Brown's case ended part of the desegregation.

CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT

In the 1950s and 1960s African American leaders lead a national movement to end racial discrimination in our country. In 1964 President Lyndon Johnson signed the Civil a Rights Bill, but not all states excepted this new bill. For example, since South Carolina didn't except this Bill, many of our industries and businesses moved away to different states. This caused South Carolina to lose huge amounts of money. Slowly, our white leadership began to except this new bill.

EDUCATION IMPROVEMENT ACT

During this time period, many of the blacks schools were one room classes with a huge population of students of all ages. There were so many different school districts. The numbers went from 1000 to 85. This law was passed by South Carolina's General Assembly.

ORANGEBURG MASSACRE

Orangeburg Massacre

  • African American college kids wanted to go bowling
  • Them not being aloud to bowl at a public bowling alley led to a protest
  • This protest raged for three nights
  • On the third night the police came to stop the growing protest but ended up open firing

STROM THURMOND

  • SC Governor
  • Held a spot in the Senate until he died
  • Encouraged bringing new industry and business
  • Reformed education (created 12th grade)
  • Developed technical colleges in SC

WHITE FLIGHTS

After the desegregation of the US many white people didn't want their kids to have to be in the same classroom as the black kids. Many of the parents got together and started forming these private academies for their white children to attend. These were called "white flights". Same of the poorer white kids attended school with the black kids, but the richer families were having none of it.

BABY BOOM

After World War II it was told that "the cry of a baby was heard across the land". There were more babies born in 1946 than ever before. 20% more than in 1945. This was the beginning of "Baby Boom". Millions of babies were being birthed every year. Finally the Baby Boom calmed down around 1964. " Baby boomers" made up 40% of America's population.
