INTERESTING FACTS

  • When a ruler died in Ghana a created in his likeness and brought to the cemetery in which he was buried.
  • The Akan peoples honor the deceased with accumulations of pottery vessels at spots in cemeteries called asensie, or "places of pots.
  • English earthenware, stoneware, and, to a lesser extent, porcelain are found extensively among American archaeological material and, until well into the 1800s, joined Chinese porcelain as major imports to this continent.
