THE CUBAN REBELLION

  • Jose Marti was an Cuban independence movement hero
  • Marti returned to Cuba to lead his people in a new revolt
  • Martis revolution led to terrible losses in human life and property

WAR FEVER

  • Business people worried about the destruction of trade and their loss of investments
  • In march 1897, William McKinley became president
  • Yellow journalism

"REMEMBER THE MAINE"

  • McKinley sent the battleship (Maine) to protect American citizens and property
  • 260 officers and crew members killed
  • There was evidence later on that the explosion was accidental

WAR IN THE PHILIPPINES

  • U.S debated on what to do with the islands
  • The Spanish fleets were in islands
  • The U.S discussed and debated on what to do with the islands that seved as bases

FIGHTING IN CUBA

  • Spanish fleet entered Santiago harbors in Cuba
  • U.S. naval force blockaded coast which resulted in trapping the Spanish
  • Heavy fighting followed due to inexperienced U.S. soldiers. Most of these soldiers were African Americans

THE ROUGH RIDERS

  • Theodore Roosevelt resigned as an assistant secretary of navy
  • He joined the fight in Cuba
  • Spanish signed armistice to end the war

"A SPLENDID LITTLE WAR"

  • Secretary of State John Hay called war a "splendid little war"
  • About 400 Americans died in war
  • Lasted about 4 months

CUBAN PROTECTORATE

  • In 1901, america gave Cuba full independence
  • It had flaws though
  • only if new constitution included clauses giving U.S. certain rights

NEW GOVERNMENT FOR PUERTO RICO

  • Puerto Rico remained under direct military rule
  • America set up a new government for Puerto Rico
  • Puerto Rico became U.S territory

ACQUIRING THE PHILIPPINES

  • 400,000 Americans died
  • About 200,000 Filipinos died
  • In 1946, the Philippines gained independence
