- Came from people believing in the equality of all people
- Came from wanting to replace competition with cooperation in industries
- Created from horrible conditions from the industrial revolution
- Early socialists were called utopians (ideas were impractical dreams)

- 1. New Lanark in Scotland (flourished) , 2. New Harmony in Indiana (failed)
