THE MONK IS DESCRIBED AS GREASY AND BALD, BUT PERSONABLE, meaning he was pleasing in behavior. He is the head of the monastery and a "manly man"(171). In the text it states that his head "was bald" and "shone like looking-glass"(line202). His face is "greased. / [and he is a] personable priest"(203-204). The appearance of the monk is not sickly "like a tormented soul"(209).
