PRESENTATION OUTLINE

1. Domino Theory - The belief that if Vietnam fell to communism, other nations in Southeast Asia would do the same

2. Geneva Accords -These agreements temporarily separated Vietnam into two zones, North and South, at the 17th parallel

3. Napalm - Jellied like gasoline that would explode on contact, the US used it to clear the Vietnamese jungles

4. Agent Orange - A toxic herbicide that was sprayed in South Vietnam by the US

5. Vietcong - Fighters for the Communist North Vietnamese who used Guerilla tactics

6. Gulf of Tonkin Resolution - Authorized the President to " take all necessary measures to repel any armed attack against the forces of the United States and to prevent any further aggression."

7. Hawks - A person the wanted the US to stay and fight in Vietnam

8. Tet Offensive - The surprise attack in 1968, when North Vietnamese attacked 100 southern cities in Vietnam, leading to high casualties on both sides.

9. Vietnamization - Nixon's plan to withdraw from the war by gradually take out American soldiers to allow the South Vietnamese Government to take on more of the burden themselves

10. Pentagon Papers - Documents that verified the government had lied about the war

11. War Powers Act - The powers of war are given back to Congress and the President must inform Congress in 48 hours of sending troops into hostile areas without declaration of war, they may not stay for more than 90 days unless congress approves

12. Richard Nixon - Secretly ordered the bombing of Cambodia and planed American's exit from the Vietnamese war

13. My Lai Massacre - US troops were ordered to find Vietcong on the Village, none were found but troops shot 200 innocent people

14. Ho Chi Minh - Vietcong leader and Vietnamese nationalist who worked most of his life to free Vietnam from colonial rule and unify the country

15. Diem - Corrupt Southern Vietnamese President who America supported until his assassination

16. Prisoners of War - Civilians were the real prisoners of war because they just wanted to live their live but were constantly mistaken for the enemy and were killed just because they lived their and was in the middle of the war

17. Body Counts - By the end of the Vietnamese War 3 million Vietnamese were killed, not to mention the traumatic defects of the chemicals , 58 thousand Americans were killed and 300 thousand were wounded

18. Kent State Massacre - 4 Kent State Ohio students were killed when a protest, about the invasion and bombing of Cambodia, got out of hand

19. 1968 - The year of the longest war, highest death toll, and the assassination of MLK and Bobby Kennedy

20. Counterculture Movement - A Hippie Movement that promoted free love, communal living, music, and increase drug use

21. Credibility Gap - People didn't believe their government because of what they were seeing on TV

22. Haight & Ashbury - One of the most popular hippie destinations, in San Francisco

23. Hippies -A society that was free, close to nature, full of love, empathy, tolerance, and cooperation, rejected materialism,and embraced spirituality, and also looked like Native Americans and used drugs

24. Doves - a person that wanted the US to withdraw from Vietnam

25. King Riots - After MLK's assassination riots broke out around the country

26. Draft Dodger - people did what ever was necessary to avoid being drafted in the Vietnamese War, fake diseases, enroll in college or even flee to Canada

27. Tim Leary - An influence in the Hippie movement to use drugs

28. Commune - A Hippie community where everyone worked together and shared resources

29. 1968 Democratic Convention - The divisive politics of the convention, brought about by the Vietnam war policies of President Johnson, prompted the Democratic party to completely overhaul its rules for selecting presidential delegates opening up the political process to millions.

30.Bobby Kennedy - He was running for presidency when he was assassinated, causing riots throughout the nation

31. Black Power Solute Olympics 68 - Tommie "jet" Smith and John Carlos, medalists in the 200-meter sprint at the Olympic Games in Mexico City, lowered their heads and raised black- gloved fists during the playing of the national anthem, in protest to racism in the United States, they were stripped of their medals
