Cold War


A state of political hostility between countries characterized by threats, propaganda, and other measures short of open warfare, in particular.

Iron Curtain

Impenetrable barrier; line of demarcation between Western Europe and the Russian zone of influence; political and ideological barrier that cuts off and isolates an area (especially as the Soviets did with their satellite states)

Truman Doctrine

President Truman's policy of providing economic and military aid to any country threatened by communism or totalitarian ideology

Containment Policy

Containment was a U.S. policy using numerous strategies to prevent the spread of communism abroad. A component of the Cold War, this policy was a response to a series of moves by the Soviet Union to enlarge communist influence in Eastern Europe, China, Korea, and Vietnam.

Mao Zedong

Was a Chinese Communist revolutionary, guerrilla warfare strategist, Marxist political philosopher, and leader of the Chinese Revolution. He was the architect and founding father of the People's Republic of China (PRC) from its establishment in 1949, and held authoritarian control over the nation until his death in 1976. His theoretical contribution to Marxism–Leninism, along with his military strategies and brand of policies, are collectively known as Maoism.

Rosenberg Trial

The trial of Ethel and Julius Rosenberg begins in New York southern district federal court. Judge Irving R. Kaufman presides over the espionage prosecution of the couple accused of selling nuclear secrets to the fusions(treason couldn't be charged because the u.s. Wasn't at war with the Soviet Union.

Venona Papers

The Venona project was a long-running secret collaboration of the United States and United Kingdom intelligence agencies involving cryptanalysis of messages sent by intelligence agencies of the Soviet Union, the majority during World War II. There were at least 13 codewords for this project that were used by the US and British intelligence agencies (including the NSA); Venona was the last that was used.

"McCarthyism"

Practice of accusing citizens of being Communist or disloyal without proof (named after Sen. Joseph McCarthy); policy of using accusations or personal investigation to restrict political opposition

House Un-American Activities Committee

Committee set up during the late 1940s and early 1950s in the U.S. House of Representatives to investigate citizens that were thought to be communists, HUAC

Domino Theory

Political theory that if one nation comes under Communist control then neighboring nations will also come under Communist control
