There was an ancient Greek proverb, recorded by Strabo, that said, “Sailing into Corinth is not for every man.” Elsewhere Strabo repeats the proverb. In the second reference, he mentions how in the city of Comana a “large quantity of women are making a living from their bodies” (πλῆθος γυναικῶν τῶν ἐργαζομένων ἀπὸ τοῦ σώματος). Strabo then calls the city a “lesser Corinth” (μικρὰ Κόρινθός).
