1 Timothy and titus

The Pastoral Epistles (1 + 2 Timothy, Titus), unlike most of Paul’s other letters which were written to entire churches, provided doctrinal, organizational, and personal instruction for individuals involved in the daily grind of ministry.

Authorship

• Paul (1:1 in both books)
• Some scholars assume otherwise
• 848 different Greek words in the 3 letters 
• 306 not found in other Pauline letters

Is this surprising? Paul was a creative, thoughtful person who was surely capable of expressing himself in different ways in different situations.

Recipients

• To Timothy (Acts 16:1-3)
• Titus (1 and 2 Corinthians; Galatians)

When?
- Not during Acts
-Probably after the book of Acts when Paul has been released from prison, is contenting his mission work, and before his final imprisonment that leads to his execution.
- AD62-65

Why?
- To provide doctrinal, organizational, and personal instruction to young evangelists.
- 1 Tim. 3:14-15; 6:11-12

Where?

• Timothy was in Ephesus (1:3)
• Titus was in Crete (1:5)
• Paul's location is unknown...
• But, he had recently visited both places.
