THE BULL RUN
The Bull Run was the first major battle of th Civil War that took place in Virginia
The Union was going to surprise attack the Confed. by a flank attack.
But, the Union executed poorly giving the Confed. time to react.
The end of the battle resulted in a Confederate win.
The Union had about 28k men fighting and the Confed. Had about 32k fighting.

The battle of Antietam took place near the Antietam River in Maryland.
This battle was supposed to be the end to the war
The Confed. Still won this battle, so the Union launched the Anaconda Plan
This plan was to set up blockades at southern ports to decrease trade.
This caused the Confed. to divide.

ANTIETAM CONT.
At this point, Gen. Robert Lee who led the confed, decided to convince Maryland to join the Confed.
This was in response to the Unions attack by ship to capture Richmond under G. Mclellan.
The Union and Confed. Fought at Maryland.

GETTYSBURG
Lincoln wrote the emancipation proclamation that declared all slaves as free.
This triggered the third battle.
The Union started to draft soldiers due to a lack of army men.
In outrage, the Confe. Decided to fight another battle.
The Union was not happy due to the fact that habeus corpus doesn't count during a nat. Emergency.

This battle marked the end of wooden warships.
The ships were now covered with iron.
The battle took place in the Missisipi River
Merrimac and Monitor fought to a standstill.
At the end due to another regiment, the Union controlled both ends of the Mississippi.

African Americans Join the War.

FORT WAGNER
This Battle marked the start of Africans joining in the war.
Africans joined the Union mostly due to the fact that they wanted freedom.
Africans were also fighting for the Confederacy because they were "promised" freedom.
Massachusetts was the first state to have a regiment with African-Americans.
Even though African-American Soldiers were poorly trained, they fought to end slavery.

Total war means war on the enemy's will to fight. The Union General put total war into action.
The Union chased the Confederacy for 20 miles to richmond, Virginia.
Lincoln was elected during the end of this war, because He was acknowledged for his northern views.
Gen. Grant demanded a surrnder from the Confederacy and Sent the Confederacy Troops home.

Women did the work when the men left for war.
Women also helped the wounded and sick in the war.
