Immediately. Tell a story, use a prop, make a joke (self-deprecation = great).

4. Don't thank anyone for anything to start

Begin in media res—“in the middle of things.”

5. Funny = better chance of connecting

  • Learn from great comedians
  • Imitate their styles
  • Tell stories with unexpected punchlines

6. Your audience cares about themselves

  • Seek their opinion
  • Solicit their expertise
  • Ask them questions to get them thinking and responding in terms of you
