Virginia: The Colony

I know what you're thinking. Why'd she pick Virginia? Well, I knew George Washington and other famous presidents were from here. I had a teensy bit done just from that prior knowledge.

Jamestown, Virginia was founded on May 13, 1607, by a colonial council. This council included John Smith and many followers.

Jamestown produced their first cash crop, tobacco, very soon.

Many presidents were from Virginia. This includes George Washington, James Madison, Thomas Jefferson, James Monroe, and John Tyler.

All of these presidents and other very famous people lived in Virginia. I got these names from history.com.

Before the capital of VA was Richmond, it was Williamsburg, which used to be called Middle Plantation.

I found this info at an interactive scavenger hunt online, and had to stick it here.

Virginia is one of the Southern colonies. It's south of Maryland, and north of the Carolinas.

This report may be about VA, but the Carolinas, North and South, used to be one colony. Then, the were split into two. Pretty crazy huh? And yes, both of them count as their own colony, in case you were wondering.

Colonial Virginia grew tobacco and rice. The Southern Colonies had slaves as well.

The Southern Colonies also grew indigo, which was like a purple dye. Pretty funny how this slide is purple!

Some colonies held town meetings. But in the Southern Colonies, there were county governments. The governors would appoint county officials, giving them more power.

It isn't too specific on much of the government, but here's what I found in my textbook.

In the colonies, women would do housework and children worked on small chores on the farm. Children would also be apprentices.

It wasn't too specific here either. But this is what many colonists did. Apprentices are like interns, just for better clarification.

MORE

Besides Virginia, there were 12 other colonies. Can you spot Virginia?
If you see Maine, Colonial Maine was even more of Massachusetts. Not the entire states were there either. That's because they were little colonies, but the smaller states are all there.
