13 reasons why

Untitled Slide

This rocket ship slide symbolizes Hannah's innocence and security. It reminds Hannah of her old home. She feels secure and safe when she is at the rocket ship, which is understood when she says, "I'd climb to the top of that rocket and let my head fall back...I'd just close my eyes and think of home." The rocket ship was Hannah's happy place.

Untitled Slide

The "Hot or Not" list represents the lost of Hannah's dignity. Hannah's name was found under the "Hot" column. She was voted as "freshman with the best ass." This list that Alex created ruined Hannah's reputation. This list led to the lack of respect that people gave her.

“Every single event documented here may never have happened had you, Alex, not written my name on that list. It’s that simple.” - Hannah
pg 41

Untitled Slide

"After your visits, I twisted my blinds shut every night...My house. My bedroom. They were suppose to be safe for me."
Hannah pg 89

This photograph expresses how Hannah's her loss of peace and security. Prior to Tyler's unwelcomed visits, Hannah always had her curtains open. Because of Tyler's unwelcomed visits, Hannah now has to close her curtains every night. She no longer has privacy.

Untitled Slide

This bag represents Hannah's hope. Hannah's peer communications teacher gave everyone a bag to receive encouragement notes from other students. When Zach stole Hannah's notes, Hannah became very upset because she depended on them. Her hope was stolen.

“My world was collapsing. I needed those notes. I needed any hope those notes might have offered.”
- Hannah pg 165

Untitled Slide

Hannah gets a drastic haircut before her class learns about suicide. On the warning signs sheet, it read that a change in appearance was a common choice for those who want to commit suicide. Hannah's haircut symbolizes her need for attention.

"When I cut my hair, my mom didn't even notice. And as far as I knew-thank you, Zach-no one noticed, either."
Hannah pg 169.

Untitled Slide

"...I pulled the closet doors shut. And I shut my eyes tight."
Hannah pg 226

During the party, Hannah hid in the closet to avoid what was happening in the other room with Bryce and Jessica. Hannah does not only hide from the problem in the room, she hides from all of her complications. This closet represent Hannah's trait of avoiding her problems. Rather than dealing with her dilemmas, Hannah dwells on the negative ways that the problems have affected her life. This closet also represents her instability.

Untitled Slide

Hannah has lost everything; her security, privacy, thoughts, and self-respect. In the novel she gets in a hot tub and allows Bryce to touch her. This hot tub represents Hannah giving into her reputation. She has allowed the rumours to catch up to her. At this point, she has given up her life.

Untitled Slide

After the party, Jenny hits a stop sign, and Hannah repeatedly asks Jenny to call the cops. This stop sign represents Hannah's voice of reasoning. The stop sign symbolizes all the good possibilities that she had to stop herself from committing suicide. However, she refused to believe that there was anything positive in her life and devoured the negativity.

Untitled Slide

“...a string connecting all of your stories... And that knot keeps growing and growing, getting more and more tangled.” - Hannah page 239

Hannah compares each story to a string. When the string knots up, the stories come together. This image of a knot expresses how tangled her life has become from all the stories.

Untitled Slide

The last time Clay saw Hannah, she wore dark blue nail polish. Hannah also wrote the numbers on the cassette tapes with blue nail polish. The nail polish symbolizes the finality of Hannah Baker’s decision to commit suicide.
