RATIFICATION

  • The fourteenth amendment was ratified July 9, 1868
  • The fourteenth amendment granted citizenship to "all persons born or naturalized in the United States, included former slaves that were recently freed after the civil war".

ORIGINS OR REASONS

  • The fourteenth came about when African Americans became emancipated after the civil war

SUPREME COURT CASE

  • In re Gault
  • Boy was accused of making inappropriate phone calls to his neighbors and sentenced to six years in a juvenile detention center until he turned 21.
  • Why?
  • "Juveniles facing an adjudication of delinquency and incarceration are entitled to certain procedural safeguards under the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment."
