Earthquake
It happened in Lisbon, Portugal. The earthquake began at 9:30am on November 1st, 1755, and was centered in the Atlantic Ocean, about 200 km WSW of Cape St. Vincent. The total duration of shaking lasted ten minutes and was comprised of three distinct jolts. The magnitude approaching 9.0 and the mercalli intensity was 12. There were three distinct quake shocks over a ten minute period. The first shock was followed by an even more powerful second shock which sent buildings toppling down.
Tsunami
A very strong tsunami caused heavy destruction along the coasts of Portugal, southwest Spain, and western Morocco. The maximum height of the waves was estimated at 6 meters. The Tsunami hit the land at 10:10am.
Tectonic plates
The tectonic plates where the mid-Atlantic. It had some after shocks for six days. This was a convergent earthquake.
Destruction
About 60 thousand people died and a lot of people injured. About 23,000 buildings were destroyed or substantially damaged. It costed millions of dollars.
