LIFE IN THE 19TH CENTURY

OVERALL LIFE

  • The population of Britain went from 9 million 1801 to 41 million in 1901
  • Many families lived in one house together in unsanitary conditions
  • Work days were long and hard with little respite
  • Children were sent to work at a very young age
  • Many were injured due to dangerous conditions in textile mills and mines

Status of Women

  • Had to obey men because men had all the resources
  • Girls received less education than boys and were not allowed into universities
  • Could only get low-paying jobs due to their lack of education
  • Women outnumbered men by 360,000
  • 30% of women over the age of twenty were unmarried

UPPER CLASS

  • Consisted of very wealthy people
  • Lived a very lavish lifestyle
  • Some even got the title of aristocrat
  • Even so, they were defined by their education not title

MIDDLE CLASS

  • Industrialists, professionals, business people, shop owners
  • These were the people who sacrificed everything to start a business
  • Did live a lavish lifestyle even though they didn't have the wealth of the upper class
  • Had expensive clothing and spacious houses
  • Made up the majority of the population

WORKING CLASS

  • Lowest class at the time
  • Agricultural, mine, and factory workers
  • Most lived in small and crowded tenements
  • Some died due to poor working and living conditions
  • Changes when labor laws come into place

WOMEN'S CLOTHING

  • Long dresses with corsets and bustles
  • Big/puffy shoulders with long or 3/4 sleeves
  • Wore gloves and any shoes or boots with a heel
  • Upperclass women wore silk
  • They had a dress for almost every event (every day, tea, etc.)

MEN'S DRESS

  • Wore top hats with a button down/dress shirt
  • Knickers with knee high socks
  • Brown or black shoes and boots
  • Dress coats that were short in the front and long in the back
  • Upperclass men wore wool with black clothing

POLITICAL IDEAS

  • Socialism- people as a whole should own the country's wealth
  • Communism- a form of socialism
  • Capitalism- the opposing idea to socialism
  • It was the idea that people should own what they earn
  • Utilitarianism- main focus should be the people's happiness

THE UTOPIANS

  • Believed in perfect society
  • Robert Owen- set up the village of New Lanark
  • Had controversial rules, safer factories, and fairer working conditions
  • Showed that profitable business could be run with fair treatment to workers
  • The complex fell into decline but it can still be used as a good example
