Communists Topple Czechoslovakia

  • Dem Eduard Benes returned from London after German occupation as the provisional president, with his right hand man Jan Masaryk.
  • Communist leader, Klement Gottwald was made Prime Minister with 38% of the vote & the backing of Moscow.

  • Free Elections were never held. US pressured Czech gov't, but offered little protection against Soviets.
  • Gottwald led an uprising, shut down the press, and seized the gov't ministry.

  • 3/10 Jan Masaryk's corpse found beneath his office window - suicide???
  • Benes resigns rather than turn government over to the Communists.
  • Benes dies within 3 months.
