1968 CHICANO STUDENT WALKOUTS

CONDITIONS

  • Chicano children received inferior education
  • Over 50% of Chicano students were kicked out of schools b/c of their lack in reading and writing skills
  • There were also overcrowded classrooms, insensitive teachers, few Chicano teachers, and less access to extra curricular activities

ACTIONS

  • In East LA students decided to take action
  • Created strike committees at Garfield, Roosevelt, and Lincoln High, along with a central committee between the schools
  • Formulated 36 demands for better schooling
  • Walked out of school, March 1-8

OBSTACLES

  • Plan went awry (students walked out too early)
  • Police struck protesters
  • 13 activists were arrested

ACHIEVEMENTS

  • Walkout caused creation of EICC which pressed schools to be more responsive to Chicanos/as
  • Promoted Chicano activists in LA and across America to take action
  • The East LA walkout methods spread
