HOW STUDENTS TOOK A STAND FOR CIVIL RIGHTS

CONDITIONS

  • Overcrowded classrooms
  • High drop-out rates
  • Speaking Spanish was banned
  • More than 50% were kicked out of schools
  • Little access to extracuriccular activities

ACTIONS

  • Came up with 36 demands
  • Walkouts (over 10,000 participants)
  • Educational Issues Coordinating Commite
  • Support from Brown Berets (paramilitary)

OBSTACLES

  • Unfair police treatment
  • 13 activists arrested ($10,000 bail)
  • Police would strike at protesters
  • Bad economic situation

ACHIEVEMENTS

  • East LA 13 unconstitutional
  • More academic programs
  • Hispanic teachers hired
  • Bilingual programs
  • Improved testing programs
