1970'S

Terrorist acts: February 21,1970 (terrorism)
I noticed as I walked the streets like I always do in the morning there was a lot of commotion of groups of people all talking about an airplane crash. I later found of that there was a terrorism attack on Swissair flight 330. There were 47 people that were killed by a bomb that had went off after being in the air for 9 minutes. My brain cannot wrap around the idea of why somebody would do this. How do the passengers families feel? My brother is on this flight and I am worried about him.

Earth day: April 22,1970 (politics)
As I step outside this afternoon I see people have celebrations and enjoying their life. Today is Earth day and the weather is beautiful it feels as if spring is finally coming. Is there going to be a Earth day every year? My family is having a party to celebrate this tonight.

Kent state: May 4, 1970 (terrorism)
As I walked out of math class today at 11:57 all of the students started bolting out of the school doors by which I had done also. As I asked a student what was happening I heard multiple gun shots. 4 students died while 9 remained injured. What would cause the Ohio National Guard to do this to students? My friends sister was one of the students who died and I can only imagine how sad she is.

Nixon visits China: February 21, 1972 (Cold War)
Today Nixon came to China for the first time in 25 years. Many people are feeling ecstatic about this since he is the president. Why did he decide to finally come to China? My uncle was there to see him when he visited in China.

ERA: March 22, 1972 (politics)
As a woman I finally feel as if things are equal for both men and women of the United States. All of us women have been waiting on this so we can become as equal as every other man. Are we going to become equal? All the women in my family are protesting to have our rights.

Watergate: June 17, 1972 (politics)
I've never been so disturbed to hear about something as what happened at Warergate. What would make a person want to break into DNC headquarters? At the dinner table my family debates on whether it was right or wrong. In my opinion, it's wrong.

Summer Olympics: Aug. 26-Sept. 16, 1972 (politics)
Today as the competitors get ready for their Olympics we are all at the local restaurant watching it on the Tv's rooting for the U.S to win. We had won the hockey tournament that day. Were there any injuries in the Olympics today? My uncle was there to watch it live he said it was a good experience.

Roe v Wade: January 22, 1973 (politics)
Today there is a political disagreement on abortion. The court had decided that abortion is okay as long as the baby is under a certain amount of weeks and not being able to survive out of the womb. In my opinion, abortion is wrong either way because the baby still has a beating heart so it is considered a human. Why would a person want to abort their child? My aunt is contemplating if she should abort her child and I don't think she should.

Nixon tapes: July 1973 (politics)
Today I heard Nixon's tapes. He recorded over 3,700 hours of his phone calls and meetings. This will play a big role in the Nixon resignation. Did the Nixon tapes really cause his resignation or was there something else? My sister was the one who found the tapes & we all listened to them as a family.

OPEC Oil embargo: October 16, 1972 (politics)
As I seen that my car was low I gas I decided to stop at the nearest gas station only to find out that gas prices had went up 70%. I went inside to ask the clerk why gas has raised so much & he said that the Arabs have done this to us and he doesn't know when gas will be back to normal price. I'm very mad about this situation but I payed it anyways because I needed the gas. Why is the gas so much more expensive? My sister was the first to warn our family about it.

Endangered species act: December 28, 1973 (politics)
The Endangered Species act has been issued today. This is being issued because many American are seeing decline in our species and we don't want that to happen so we are finding every way to keep it from happening and now there is an Endangered Species Act that will make this happen? My cousin works in the zoo's and had said there is a decline in elephants.

Nixon resignation: August 9, 1974 (politics)
Today Nixon has decided to resign and the news has traveled quickly all around the world. Many people are gossiping about reasons that he did this while others just say he's resigning because his time of presidency is up. Did people want Nixon to resign? My sister wants him to resign for the Nixon tapes.

Ford Pardon: September 8, 1974 (politics)
President Pardon had admits that he was a part of the Watergate scandal. Everybody is shocked and there is gossip all around the town. Many people have hurtful things to say about Pardon, while many also have nice things to say about him. Why did he do the Watergate scandal? This is interesting to my family.

Fads and Fashion: Pet Rock, 1975 (culture)
Today I seen in the shop of the window and item called the "Pet Rock". It was cheap so I decided to buy it and see what it's all about. It was like having a real pet except I never had to feed it or take it out, it was almost as if I had an imaginary friend. I bought more of these to keep the business going so many others could experience this neat "pet rock". Do they sell good? My sister got the first pet rock that came out.

Fall of Saigon: April 30, 1975 (politics)
Today marks the end of the Vietnam war because of the fall of Saigon. Now there will finally be more peace in the U.S. now that that war is over. The fall of Saigon was the capture of South Vietnam. Why did the Fall of Saigon happen? My dad was in Vietnam when the war had ended everybody was happy.

President Carter: 1977-1981(politics)
Today I went to vote. I had to make a tough decision but in the end I chose President Carter. I hope that he is our president for a long time because he put up a good fight to be our president. Will his term be long? My brother voted for him to be president.

Star Wars: May 25, 1977 (culture)
Today as I was walking I seen an Ad that rhe new movie, Starwars, comes out today. I had to buy it for myself to watch it. As I ask my friends they also agree with me that they haven't watched something that good in a long time. Will there be more to Star Wars movies? My dad was offered to produce a movie with them.

Affirmative action: June 28, 1978 (politics)
The affirmative action is to fight for equality. I woke up this morning to crowds roaring through the streets protesting about equality and rights. They seemed to be angry and from their point of view I would be angry as well. Do they end up becoming equal? My dad was a part of the riot.

Camp David Peace Accords: September 18, 1978 (politics)
I had been offer to go to the Camp David Peace Accords but I turned down the offer since it will be ran by Egyptians. How long did it last for? My neighbors said that it was a horrible experience and they nearly died.

Jackson 5 "Blame it on the boogie", October 1978 (culture)
Today as I was driving down the free way a new song I never heard of before came on. It's called "Blame it on the Boogie". This song has been stuck in my head all day and I can't get it out. I can see the Jackson 5 going far in the music industry if they keep making songs like this. Are they going to make more music? My cousin is friends with one of the members.

Disco (fever): December 1978 (culture)
As I walk into the club earlier in the night there was a new kind of music and dance that I had noticed everyone doing so I thought I should join in. Later I learned that I was doing the disco & I enjoyed learning something new that I was good at. I hope that the disco stays around for a long time. Do they have disco classes? My mom was going for an interview to be an instructor.

3 mile island: March 28, 1979 (politics)
The smell of this horrible nuclear spill was the worst thing I've ever smelt. The nuclear spill was the worst it's also ever been in the U.S. I heard that it began because of the failure of the non-nuclear secondary system. I'm hoping that nobody in the building was effected by the nuclear spill. Did anybody get hurt by the smell? My dad was working there when this happened and he had to rush home.

Soviets invade Afganistan: December 1979 (terrorism)
Today the soviets decided to finally invade Afghanistan. After being rivals for many years the soviets decided to invade. The soviets ended up failing what they were trying to accomplish for several years. How is the economy after this happens? My uncle was a part of the soviets who invaded.

1980'S

Fads & fashion: boom box 1980 (culture)
Today the boom box came out & with all the new music and styles of music that is coming out I thought it would be a good idea to buy one. It works really good and I like how I can easily listen to my music and it can be used when I travel which I enjoy to do. Will they be in style for a long time? My cousin bough the first boom box that came out.

El Salvador assassination: March 24, 1980 (terrorism)
Today Óscar Romero was assassinated in El Salvador. It's big news around the whole world. After this I am almost in fear that something like this could happen to me or to somebody that I am close to. Do they know who killed him? My dad was in El Salvador when this happened and he said it was all over the news and people were sad.

AIDS: April 24, 1980 (Cold War)
Today many people have AIDS and many people are catching it quickly from others. I hope that I am not one of those people who catch it because it could lead to death. Almost every person in my neighborhood knows somebody who have caught AIDS. Are they going to find a cure to it? My neighbor has aids so we have to stay away from her.

Popular music: Diana Ross "Upside Down", June 1980 (culture)
Today my friend showed me this new song called "upside down" it has a nice beat to it. At first I didn't like it now it won't leave my head. This is a popular song right now in the 80's, and I hope to hear more from Diana Ross. Is she going to be a popular artist for a long time? My mom went to high school with her and they worked on songs together.

Summer Olympics: July 19- August 3, 1980 (politics)
I decided to go to the summer Olympics today since I've never been to one before. I'm rooting for the USA and I'm hoping they we place in a lot of categories. We won 2,400 metals today. What country won the most medals? My cousin was participating in one of the events.

Bomb at Oktoberfest: September 26, 1980 (terrorism)
This year when I went to the annual Oktoberfest there was a bombing. Over 13 people were killed and 211 were injured, I am so thankful I was not one of those people. I hope that the people who were injured survive & those who died to rest in peace. The more terrorist attacks that happen the more I am scared to go to events like this and I'm sure other people feel same way. Do they know who the bombers were? My dad was one of the 211 who were injured.

John Lennon killed: December 8, 1980 (terrorism)
All over the newspaper headlines was the report that John legend has been shot & he is dead. This is effecting many people in the community because he was a big part of a lot of people's lifestyles. I hope that in time the person who committed this crime will get paid with consequences. Do they know who killed him? My brother is very hurt by this death because John Lennon was his role model.

New conservatives in government: 1980 (politics)
Today President Ronald Reagan made tax cuts, and a greatly increased military budget. I think that this will effect our country in a good way & I hope to see improvements by this. Will things stay like this for a long time? This will be good for my uncle who is in the military.

President Ronald Reagan: 1981-1989 (politics)
Today Ronald Reagan became our new president. He got the most amount of votes and i was one of the people that voted for him. I hope he is a good president. Will he be president for a long time? My mom voted for him.

Iranian Hostage crisis ends: January 20, 1981(terrorism)
In the Iranian hostage 66 Americans were held hostage for 444 days. Finally, they were released back to their families. I remember watching them all come out as happy as could be to finally be leaving where they had been for so long. What did they do while they were trapped there? My uncle was one of the 66 Americans held hostage.

MTV: August 1981(culture)
Since I've gotten my tv there hasn't been many stations until MTV. It's all that me and my family watch now and they have funny shows. More and more people are ordering it on their Tv's because it is cheap and there's good shows. Is MTV going to become popular? My brother was offered an acting job from them.

ERA: December 21, 1982 (politics)
As a woman I feel as if things are finally starting to become more equal. More women are having their rights and can speak what they want to and do the things that all men can do. Will it stay like this? My sister participated in the ERA.

Manuel Noriega: dictator, 1983-1989 (politics)
There is a new dictator and his name is Manuel Noriega. He is the dictator of Panama. He helped us with a lot of stuff in the U.S. Was he a good dictator? My sister got to see him when she visited Panama.

Star Wars: March 23, 1983 (culture)
Today I bought more Star Wars. Since they first came out I have been addicted to the movies I buy every one of them. On the weekends I have my friends come over and we watch them all together. Many people are rooting for them to make more because everybody loves them. Will they make more? My brother wants to audition if they do.

Grenada: October 25, 1983 (terrorism)
Today the United States invade Grenada. It was all over the news as many soldiers went over there to invade. But how could somebody invade a country when those people have families and children and homes that they won't be able to get back? My mom just got back from Grenada and I'm glad she was home before the United States invaded them.

Iran contra scandal: September 1985 (terrorism)
During the Iran contra scandal it was supposed to be Iran sending goods to the army nut it was a political scandal in the United States. This took place when Ronald Reagan found out he had colon cancer. What would cause the Iran scandal? My dad is upset about this.

Popular movie: "The Breakfast Club" February 15, 1985 (culture)
The Breakfast Club came out today and I wasn't going to buy it until everyone suggested it. I ended up liking it and it's my new favorite movie. This is a very popular movie that just came out and I expect it to be a popular movie for a long time. How long did it take for them to produce this movie? My family has bought each of us a dvd so we can watch it in our Tv's in our rooms.

Stock market crash: October 1987 (politics)
Today the biggest stock market crash was "Black Monday". On "Black Monday" 500 million dollars was lost. During our economy that is a lot of money to be lost. We are all coming up with ways on how we can earn this money back. What caused the stock market to crash? My family's business went it debt from this.

Falling of the Berlin Wall: November 9, 1989 (Cold War)
Today I helped to knock down the Berlin Wall. Many people came to do this. We knocked it down so that way there would be more opening space. Should it have been knocked down? My brother had helped knock it down and he said there was a lot of people there to knock it down too.
