19th CENTURY ENGLAND

BEFORE

  • 20% of the population lived in towns in 1801
  • In the early 1800's, many worked in agriculture
  • Goods were made by hand

AFTER

  • About 50% percent of people lived in towns by 1881
  • By the late 1800's, many people worked in factories
  • Goods were produced by machine

LIVING STANDARDS

  • Products were cheaper because they were mass produced
  • Housing was better for people in the late 19th century
  • New methods of transportation meant that goods could be easily moved
  • Life became more comfortable and safer

WOMEN'S STATUS

  • Women didn't have a voice, and had to obey their husbands
  • Young boys received a better education
  • Women lived lives hardly any better than slaves
  • Women didn't have a choice on who they were to marry
  • Women received low paying jobs

SCIENCE AND RELIGION

  • In the beginning, religion & science were all in harmony
  • The bible and nature were believed to be tied together
  • Discoveries of evolution contradicted with Genesis
  • This lead to many debates & arguments

LITERATURE

  • There were many narratives of self invention written
  • Many popular genres were poetry and novels based on life
  • Writers expressed creativity in experimental literary forms
  • Their writing reflected their identity
