19TH CENTURY ENGLAND

RELIGION

• Roman Catholic Church held a minor role in the lives of English People
• Those who stayed loyal to Christianity were looked down upon after Henry VIII
• England, however, was tolerant to most religions

EDUCATION

• After the Industrial Revolution, the people had a higher level of education
• Schools were established to educate children at a young age
• Many schools opened due to the growing population
• Sunday School, Elementary, Monitorial, Infant, Technical Education, and Industry Schools

SCIENCE

• Began many studies in several different fields
• New Developments in Physical and Life Science
• Investigated nature and looked to find what was inorganic and heavenly
• Discovered and became interested in what was organic, vital and living

RELATIONSHIPS AND MARRIAGE

• Women would get married and have children, and their husband would support them
• When a couple married, the wife became dependent on her husband
• Everything the wife owned became the possessions of the husband
• Once married, it was very difficult for a woman to obtain a divorce

Class System

• A major trait of English Society
• It was a complex social and economic system
• Divided into Four Sections
• Upper, Middle, Working, and Poor

ECONOMY

• The Industrial Revolution allowed Europe to be the leader in the world's economy
• England was a leader in banking, business, and trade
• The social classes made the economic status of society very diverse.
• Later in the 19th century, they experienced an economic decline
• Other nations throughout the world began to catch up with the status of England
