20% time

Getting classes out of the classroom.

What exactly is 20% time?

Students design the learning experience.

20 %Time is a simple concept that any teacher can execute. Give students one day a week to work on a project of their choosing. What kind of project? One that serves a real audience.

STEP 1: THE BAD IDEA FACTORY

Bad ideas drive great ideas.

Most students don't know how to answer the question, "what kind of project do you want to pursue?"

Help them discover great ideas through The Bad Idea Factory.

STEP 2: THE PROPOSAL

20% time is serious business.

Often it is a business.

That's why 20% time projects need thoughtful, polished proposals presented to the class to provide critical feedback.

STEP 3: THE JOURNAL

Accountability, not compliance.

You find yourself in an elevator with the one person who has the power to make your project a reality. You have the time it takes to get to the top floor to sell her on your idea. Do it.

STEP 4: THE ELEVATOR PITCH

It's time to celebrate DONE. The end of the year closes with a series of presentations. Students have an opportunity to demonstrate their hard work, their struggles, and their victories.

STEP 5: FINAL PRESENTATIONS

It's time to show off.

This in WES?!

Seriously?!?

We try. We have an opportunity to try. Kids are interested. Kids want change. Let's try.
