24th amendment

BACKGROUND

  • 5 states had a pole tax that affected the poor from voting
  • Virginia, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, Texas
  • The pole tax was specifically set up so blacks couldn't vote
  • The tax affected blacks because most didn't have jobs

IMPORTANT PEOPLE

  • Martin Luther King Jr.
  • Malcolm X
  • They were important because they were the main protesters
  • They were brave enough to risk their lives for what they believe in
  • In 1968 MLK actually did die for what he believed in

TATICS

  • Protest
  • Violence
  • The most famous is the speech I have a dream by MLK Jr.

SIGNIFICANCE TO AMERICAN HISTORY

  • Now as long as your a citizen of America you can vote
  • Black and whites are now treated closer to equals
  • Now more blacks are democrats and more whites are republic
  • 50 years ago black people couldn't vote and now the president is black

  • The grandfather rule was if you grandpa didn't vote then you can't either
