JUDICIAL

THE BRANCH OF GOVERNMENT HAVING THE POWER TO INTERPRET LAWS

JUDICIAL BRANCH

  • There are nine Supreme Court justices and they surve until they die.
  • The President appoints them and the Senate confirms their appointments.
  • Judical Review is when the Supreme Court makes sure a law is Constitutional.
  • This was created in 1803 and if it is not Constitutional it defers to a lower court.
  • Unconstitutional - not it agreement with the Constitution.

THE BRANCH OF GOVERNMENT HAVING THE POWER TO MAKE LAWS

LEGISLATIVE BRANCH

  • There are 435 members of the House of Representatives.
  • They must be at least 25 years old, reside in the state, and live in US for 7 years.
  • There are 100 members in the Senate.
  • They must must be at least 30 years old, reside in state, and live in US for 9 years.
  • They make laws, control spending, and represent the people.

EXECUTIVE

THE BRANCH OF GOVERNMENT HAVING THE POWER TO ENFORCE LAWS

EXECUTIVE BRANCH

  • You must be at least 35 years old and born in the US to be a President.
  • Chief executive: the president is responsible for carrying out nations laws
  • Chief diplomat: president appoints diplomats
  • Commander in chief: president controls nations military, chief of state
  • Chief of state: president serves as representative for all Americans

EXECUTIVE BRANCH

  • Legislative leader: president proposes laws to the Congress and works for their passage
  • The Presidents Cabinet includes the Vice President and heads15 executive departments

CHECKS AND BALANCES

  • Makes sure no branch has more power than the others.
  • Once a law has been proposed it is checked by each branch to see if it's Constitutional.
  • The laws can be vetoed by the other branches.
