This presentation will explain the characteristics and roles of the 3 branches of the United States government, which are the executive, legislative, and judicial.

The government is divided in to three branches so that one person or group does not take over everything like a dictatorship.

Executive branch

  • The president is in charge of this branch
  • They have the ability to be the chief law enforcement officer and veto laws
  • The president is in charge of recommending new laws
  • Commander of the Armed Forces

Legislative branch

  • Congress is in charge of this branch
  • Congress is divided in to the House of Representatives and the Senate
  • Their main job is to make the laws
  • The Senate impeaches (fires) people
  • The House creates all of the spending bills

Judicial branch

  • Supreme Court is in charge of this branch
  • They review the laws
  • The Court decides cases about people's state rights
  • Make decisions about if people are following the laws
