30 Book Challenge

2023-2024

This year, we are going to challenge ourselves as readers by reading 30 books before June 4th.
That’s right, 30 books!

On this reading journey, we'll be reading, celebrating reading, sharing what we read, and keeping a record of what we read.

To fulfill the 30 Books By June Challenge, you will need to read books from many genres!

FAQ

How long does my
book need to be?

Your book should be at least
80 pages (unless it's a graphic novel). Talk to me if you want to read a book less than 80 pages.

What if my book is REALLY long?

Books longer than 350 pages count as two books!

How will I find good books in genres that I don’t usually read?

You can...

  • Local, school, or classroom library
  • Ask a friend
  • Look at Recommended Reading List
  • Listen to a book talk from Mr. Edison or Ms. Travaille or the librarian... or your classmates!
  • Online "best book" searches
  • Use the AR Bookfinder

Will a whole class novel or literature circle book count as one of my 30 books?

YES!

How do I keep track?

Keep a record

  • Periodically, update your 30-Book Challenge Reading Log in Google Classroom (more on this later)
  • You must pass an AR test (70%) to count a book towards the 30-Book Challenge
  • If there is no AR test for your book, ask Mr. Edison how you can, instead, complete an "AR Alternative Report"

Important!

  • You will earn HOW grade every half-quarter and SBP grade every quarter.
  • Your grade will be based on your progress. You’ll need to read, on average, 8 books each quarter to meet the goal by the end of the school year.
  • That comes out to a little less than one book each week
  • Totally doable!

Also Important!

  • You may have noticed that the goal of 8 books for 4 quarters equals 32 books, not 30.

Yeah! What about that?

It doesn't add up! What are you trying to pull?

NaNoWriMo!

  • It does add up, because in November you will have the option of reading only 2 books (instead of 4) by participating in a month-long writing competition.
  • NaNoWriMo! It stands for National Novel Writing Month.
  • More details to come...

Last Thoughts

  • 70% is considered a passing grade on an AR quiz
  • Books must be within your ZPD: just right -- not too hard, not too easy.
