THE THIRTY YEARS WAR

ABOUT THE THIRTY YEARS WAR

  • Started in 1618 and ended in 1648
  • The Thirty Years War was a war between the Catholic and protestants
  • The war took place in almost all over Europe

CAUSES OF THE WAR

  • As France gained power, Spain declined during the war
  • Mercanaries and armies had to fund themselves by looting
  • Eastern Europe had a poor middle class
  • Many countries and empires were not untited because of religions

FAMOUS PEOPLE- HABSBURG'S

  • Family controlled the Netherlands and Spain
  • Kings felt trapped by the family and started a revolt

FAMOUS PEOPLE- GUSTAVUS ADOLPHUS

  • Led his armies as king at the age of 16
  • Died in 1632 (age 38) in war
  • Known by some as the "Father of Modern Warefare"

FAMOUS PEOPLE- FERDINAND II

  • Was given the Throne to Bohemia
  • Reduced religious activities

FAMOUS PEOPLE- CARDINAL RICHELIEU

  • Worked in a Catholic Church and soon worked with the government
  • Known as the Kings "Cheif Minister" or "First Minister"

The Bohemian Stage:
A group of men barged into the Council chambers because the council had been so loyal to the Emperor and threw the men inside out of a window 3 stories off of the ground. None of the men were injured. This was the start of the Thirty Years War.

The Danish Phase:
In 1629, Ferdinand II made all of Protestant states back to Catholicism and also he creates an army. The Treaty of Lübeck was signed in 1629.

The Swedish Phase:
Cardinal Richelieu want Sweden to have more war. Adolohus wins a major battles against the Catholics, but is soon later killed. The Peace of Prague was signed to end this part of the war, but was not signed by the French or Spanish (they continued to go at war).

The Franco-Swedish Phase:
France and Holland soon join the war to help Swede, and the French defeat the Spanish. This war was ended by the Peace of Münster on May 15, 1648.

EFFECTS

  • Sweden became a major European power for the next 60 - 70 years
  • Austria was forced to abandon its traditional alliance with Spain
  • France became the dominant European military power
  • Holland and Switzerland were fully independent countries
  • Protestantism in Germany saved
