  • 3-the rules reflect those who have the power
  • 4-know the rules to gain power easily
  • 5-those with power are not willing to acknowledge

1-Issues of power

  • -are enacted in the classroom:
  • -power of teacher over students
  • -power of textbook publishers
  • -power of the state
  • -power of the school

2-Culture of power

  • -rules/ codes for participating
  • -the way you talk
  • - the way you write
  • -the way you dress
  • -the way you interact

3-rules reflect those who have power

  • -the culture is based on those who have the power
  • -the more powerful=the more successful
  • -children in middle class do better because 
  • they are being taught and school is being run 
  • by upper class

4-the rules need to be known

  • -knowing the rules allows easier access to
  • the culture
  • -being informed about the culture allows
  • for easier transition into it

5-those with power don't know or care

  • -people are not willing to acknowledge
  • that they have the power
  • -those with less power know where the 
  • power is being held
  • power = indirect communication 

"I want the same thing for everyone elses

children as I want for my own"

education that:

  • Reflects liberal middle class values-
  • -maintain the status-quo
  • -power must remain in the hands of 
  • those that already have it

Liberal Educators:

  • Goals:
  • -children to become autonomous
  • -develop without outside influences
  • -but not all children are used to this culture
  • -others want children taught success stragies
