  • -introduces the topic
  • -states thesis
  • Intro should tell the topic right away

  • Only one or two sentences long
  • Be able to back it up with examples

3. SUPPORTING DETAILS

  • Examples, facts, and quotations
  • Backs up the thesis
  • Correspound with the topic of main paragraph
  • Use words; first, for example, and in contrast

4. BODY PARAGRAPHS

  • Provides details that support the thesis
  • unity-all sentences should relate to the main idea
  • Coherence-essay should flow smoothly
  • Should be the same number of paragraphs as the main ideas
