  • Declaration of faith
  • Words of Shadahada “there is no God but Allah, and Muhammad is his messenger
  • Repeat 3 times to become Muslim

SALAT

5 DAILY PRAYERS

  • Muslims pray five times a day (dawn, midday, late afternoon, sunset, sunset-midnight)
  • Muslims can pray anywhere, Mosque is preferable
  • Prepare for prayers by doing wudhu (cleansing of the feet and hands)
  • Muslims called to prayer by Muezzin

ZAKAT

CHARITY/ALMSGIVING

ZAKAT

  • Zakat is giving wealth to those that need it
  • Zakat helps soup kitchens, housing for poor, children’s education, clothing, and many more.
  • Muslims must pay 1/40 of surplus wealth a year for Zakat
  • Can be paid by giving to religious official, or by distributing it yourself
  • Zakat is said to help control greed, makes wealth becomes pure

SAWM

FASTING DURING THE MONTH OF RAMADAN

SAWM

  • When Muslims don’t eat or drink in the day during Ramadan. Only eat while sun is down.
  • During Ramadan, Muslims also cant smoke, talk behind others backs, or use foul language.
  • Fasting used to mentally recharge, forgive past sins, feel sympathy for those less fortunate than you, and to feel closer to god.
  • Children, the sick, travelers, pregnant women, and the elderly are excused from fasting.

HAJJ

PILGRIMAGE TO MECCA

HAJJ

  • Hajj is when Muslims are required to make pilgrimage to Mecca once in their lifetime if physically and financially able.
  • Muslims walk around the Kaaba (a sacred building) 7 times counterclockwise, like Muhammad did
  • Muslims only wear two white sheets during Hajj, shows all Muslims are equal
  • Muslims walk between two hills to honor Abrahams sacrifice, when his wife and kids were searching for water
  • Muslims say God told Abraham to sacrifice a goat, so all Muslims do so after Hajj
