SHAHADA

PROFESSION OF FAITH

SHAHADA

  • declares belief in one God (monotheism)
  • Muhammad is God’s messenger
  • Muslims believe in God, and pledge their submission to Him
  • Reciting the Shahada is most important of the 5 pillars
  • First thing infants hear/last thing a Muslim hears

SALAT

FIVE DAILY PRAYERS

SALAT

  • called to pray 5 times a day, dawn, noon, mid-afternoon, sunset, after nightfall
  • Before praying, Muslims must preform wudu
  • When praying, face the direction of the qhuiblah
  • preferred that Muslims pray at a mosque, but are allowed to pray anywhere
  • May use prayer beads

ZAKAT

CHARITY/ALMSGIVING

ZAKAT

  • must give at least 2.5% of their surplus wealth each year to the poor
  • helps provide for many needs
  • A promise to help those in need
  • Regarded as a form of worship
  • Purifies yearly earnings

SAWM

FASTING DURING THE MONTH OF RAMADAN

  • month when God first revealed His message to Muhammad
  • Fasting during the day, breaking fast at night
  • After breaking fast, preform the sunset prayer, a portion of the Qur’an is read aloud
  • Tendency to overdue it after breaking fast
  • A self choice in becoming a better person

HAJJ

PILGRIMAGE TO MECCA

HAJJ

  • Those who are able must do at least once in lifetime
  • believe that Abraham built the Ka’bah as a shrine to honor God
  • circle Ka’bah seven times
  • Men run in footsteps of Abraham’s wife, women walk
  • Men and women wear same clothes
