Make an effort to go to the dog park, walk along the river, or in a peaceful forest. On a weekend, make the effort to research a trail or hiking path nearby, and make a half day excursion out of it and travel to the mountains. It'll make the exercise and walk a lot more enjoyable - and you'll look forward to the activity!

Amp up your walks. Try interval running if you're a beginner (walk 5 minutes, run 1 minute), or a steady, long jog if time permits. You can add some hills, or do push-ups when you throw your dog's toy - there are so many ways to amp up a simple walk if you get creative!
Make sure to always bring water for the two of you, and a few treats for your furry jogging partner. This has the added bonus of really tiring out your excitable dog while you're away for the day!

Get committed and sign up for a fundraising walk - like Dog Jog in Calgary, organized by the Calgary Humane Society. By signing up in advance, you will feel more committed to whichever activity you have chosen.
Don't let winter keep you huddled indoors! Invest in a good coat for your pup, and boots in colder weather. You can extend your walks with some simple gear to keep you both warm.
And don't forget to take advantage of emptier, snow covered dog parks. Off leash training becomes easier in an environment with less things to sniff (like dogs, dirt and grass)
Always remember to hydrate and take rests when needed. You know your own body's limits, but always watch for your dog panting or lying down at unnecessary stops. He's not stubborn, he just needs a break!
