PRESENTATION OUTLINE

THE SIX ESSENTIAL COMPONENTS

PROTEINS

  • Help grown and maintain cells
  • Transfer resources throughout the body
  • Make up amino acids and enzymes
  • Should consume about 200 calories per day
  • Not required for muscle building

FATS

  • Store energy
  • Fats are divided into two groups: Oils-liquids, Fats-solids
  • Are also saturated and unsaturated fats
  • Trans fats- negatively impact body
  • Not all fats are bad, essential fatty acids are required to survive

CARBOHYDRATES

  • Major energy storers
  • Sugars- store energy which is used fast, found in fruits and vegetables
  • Starches- store energy which is used over a long time, found in grains and roots

VITAMINS

  • Maintain and produce cells
  • Can be toxic in high doses
  • Can be either water soluble, which are used fast, or fat soluble, which are stored
  • Supplements may be needed due to insufficiencies

MINERALS

  • Minerals do many things that help the body operate
  • Major and minor minerals
  • Some, such as salt, can be over consumed and cause problems
  • Many problems can also arise from mineral defficiencies

WATER

  • Makes up 60% of body
  • Lack of water can lead to dehydration
  • Need for water may vary based on different factors
