1ST 7 PRESIDENTS

GEORGE WASHINGTON

The electoral college selected George anonymously to become president in 1789 along with his Vice President, John Adams. George had said to James Madison that " the first of everything in our situation will serve to establish a precedent." A precedent is an action or decisions that later serves as an example.
First Congress had created departments in the executive branch for different areas of national policy. Washington would meet with the department heads who advised him. For three positions Washington had to choose, he chose Alexander Hamilton, Henry Knox, and Samuel Osgood.


JOHN ADAMS

John Adams had served two terms of Vice Presidency. After he had become the second president of the United States. Adams had sent three commissioners to France, but the French foreign minister would not speak unless there was a bribe. He then reported to congress and printed the correspondence and then the three men were referred to as x, y, and z. After all this he retired to his farm in Quincy.

THOMAS JEFFERSON

President Jefferson had to face the task of putting his republican ideas into practice. One of his first was to select the cabinet members. Jefferson had lowered the military and had save a lot of money during his presidency. Jefferson was also the one who had bought the Louisiana purchase and had sent Louis and Clark to explore it.

JAMES MADISON

James Madison was elected in 1808. He had face difficulty continuing an unpopular trade that Jefferson had started, he also felt pressure from the war hawks. In 1812, he decided they should vote on war and that's how the war of 1812 had started against Great Britain.

JAMES MONROE

James Monroe was elected in 1816'he had sent U.S troops to secure the border of Florida led by Andrew Jackson. He and Adams put together a document called the Monroe Doctrine. This was to protect American interests, and it was a statement of American policy warning European powers not to interfere with Americas.

JOHN QUINCY ADAMS

John Quincy Adams was the first president to be a son of a president. He had been chosen by the house after Andrew Jackson didn't have enough electoral votes. Jackson's supporters thought that Adams had bribed Henry Clay. Henry crated a system called the American system which was a series of measures intended to make the United States economically self-sufficient.

ANDREW JACKSON

Andrew Jackson took office in 1829. He was forced to t respond to the growing problem about tariffs. There was a conflict between the supporters and opponents of nullification deepened. This is known as the nullification crisis. Jackson had opposed the second bank of the United States founded by congress in 1816
