FROM YOU

I HAVE BEEN ABSENT IN THE SPRING,

WHEN PROUD PIED APRIL,

Dressed in all his trim,
Proud-pied: resplendently variegated, or proudly dappled.

HATH PUT A

Spirit of youth in every thing,

THAT HEAVY SATURN

Laughed and leapt with him.
Heavy Saturn: The gloomy God of dearth and winter.

YET NOR THE LAYS OF BIRDS,

Nor the sweet smell,
Lays of birds: Songs of birds

OF DIFFERENT FLOWERS

Of odour and in hue,
Odour: British spelling of odor

Hue: Shade of color

COULD MAKE ME

Any summer's story tell,

OR FROM THEIR PROUD LAP

Pluck them where they grew:

NOR DID I WONDER

At the lily's white,

NOR PRAISE

The deep vermillion in the rose;
Vermillion: A crimson-like red

THEY WERE BUT SWEET,

But figures of delight,

DRAWN AFTER YOU,

You pattern of all those.
Drawn after you: copied; taking the friend as a model.

YET SEEMED IT WINTER STILL,

And you away,

AS WITH YOUR SHADOW

I with these did play.
As with your shadow: A reflection of his friend; sexual overtones.
