80s JAZZ

  • In the 1980s the jazz community shrank, but it was above country.A mainly older audience retained an interest in traditional and straight-ahead jazz styles.
  • Straight-ahead jazz is a head followed by a solo by each melody instrument, and sometimes drums and bass, followed by a reprise of the head.However, many Latin rhythms are also considered as straight-ahead Jazz.

Wynton Marsalis

  • He was born in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1961
  • He is a trumpeter, composer, and artistic director for the Jazz at Lincoln Center Currently.
  • He grew up with a family filled with jazz artists. His father was famous piano player. He's the brother of Branford (saxophonist), Delfeayo (trombonist), and Jason (drummer).
  • They created a musical group called "The Marsalis Family".

CHILDHOOD

  • When he was 14 he performed with the New Orleans Philharmonics.
  • During high school he performed withthe New Orleans Symphony Brass Quintet, New Orleans Community Concert Band, New Orleans Youth Orchestra, and the New Orleans Symphony
  • When he graduated he moved to New York City to attend Juilliard.
