  • Not everyone has access to forms of technology and digital media
  • Those with access should work towards ensuring equal access and equality in digital media and technology
  • Without equal access, we cannot progress as a society using these tools
  • Increasing access will lead to a stronger, improved society
  • Keep in mind that other resources might need to be created and provided based upon different conditions

DIGITAL ETIQUETTE

  • Be on the lookout for inappropriate behavior online
  • Those who use technology are often not educated in digital etiquette
  • Many feel uncomfortable talking to others about this
  • Rules are imposed and technology is banned to prevent inappropriate use
  • Not enough to create new rules-must teach others to behave responsibly in a digital world

DIGITAL LAW

  • Deals with ethics of technology within society
  • Unethical use is, essentially, theft or crime
  • Need to understand that damage to others' work, identity, property is a crime
  • Applies to all
  • Hacking, illegal downloading, plagiarizing, creating destructive worms, Trojan Horses, spam, and theft are illegal

  • Digital commerce is the online trade of goods and services
  • Commonplace, but comes with responsibility
  • Beware of illegal trade
  • Be aware of illegal international trade
  • Learn to be active and aware in a digital economy

DITIGAL COMMUNICATION

  • 21st century brought an era of change in digital communications
  • Some forms include cellular phones, instant messaging and texting, and email
  • Changed ability to communicate long distances with others
  • While efficient and helpful , many have taken advantage of this
  • Brought increased risk of cyber bullying and other harmful and detrimental actions

DIGITAL LITERACY

  • Process of teaching and learning about the use of technology
  • Schools and other institutions have made progress in integration of technology and course content
  • Workplaces have found videoconferencing and wikis to be helpful-media allows for quicker access of information
  • We need to learn how to operate in an increasingly digital world
  • Many jobs including those in medicine, law, business, philanthropy, and politics have become reliant on technology

DIGITAL RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Basic set of rights for every citizen
  • Right to privacy, free speech, etc
  • Must be addressed, discussed, understood in digital world
  • With rights come responsibilities
  • Must define what is appropriate

  • Eye safety, RSS, sound ergonomics
  • Psychological issues-Internet addiction
  • Others must be taught of dangers
  • Citizenship includes education of protection

  • Same is true for digital community
  • Same household protection must be applied online
  • Not enough to trust others for our own safety
  • As responsible digital citizens, must protect ourselves from disturbing outside forces

  • Educate and connect online-Communication, Literacy, Commerce
  • Protect yourself and others digitally-Rights and Responsibilities, Health and Welfare, Security
