What Happened?

  • On September 11, 2001 there was a terrorist attack by an 
  • Islamic terrorist group, al-Qaeda.  
  • Members of al-Qaeda boarded planes with 
  • box cutters (like pocket knives)
  • Took control and highjacked the planes

the pentagon, world trade center, white house house

What Happened?

  • The passengers on the plane headed to the White House fought back 
  • Instead of hitting the White House, the plane 
  • crashed into a field in Pennsylvania.
  • Years after 9/11, the U.S. still searches for Osama Bin Laden

Osama bin laden

  • Osama Bin Laden founded the terrorist group al Qaeda
  • that attacked on September 11, 2001
  • After 9/11, he went into hiding and it took over a decade to
  • find him (eventually found in Pakistan)
  • He had lots of people helping him hide

Osama bin laden

  • Born March 10, 1957 
  • Killed March 2, 2011 in Pakistan       
  • Shot by Navy Seal, but his name can not be revealed for his security  

al Qaeda

  • al Qaeda is an islamic terrorist group based in Afghanistan
  • al Qaeda began in 1988 and still continues today
  • They have many Islamic allies 
  • The United States is one of their enemies

How it affected the country

  • Security procedures at airports became much more strict 
  • liquid over 3.4 ounces were not allowed on plane,  
  • all baggage must be checked
  • specific ID required, medal detectors,
  • people weren't allowed at gates without a ticket

How it affected the country

  • Islamic or muslim people being terrorists became a stereotype
  • Rebuilding of the Pentagon and World Trade Center.
  • Nobody wanted to take planes because of the attacks
  • Car crashes increased by thousands in just a week

How it affected the country

  • Thousands of deaths and family members lost
  • The government/ law enforcement began more frequently
  • listening to phone calls and checking medical/financial records

Timeline of events

  • 5:45  the 19 hijackers pass security
  • After the planes took off, flight attendants notified FBI
  • that the plane was being hijacked
  • at 9:00 the planes hit the twin towers,  north tower first
  • at 10:00 the south tower collapsed and killed over 600 people

Timeline of events

  • at 10:30 the north tower collapsed, killing over 1,400 people     
  • lower Manhattan evacuated over one million people at 11:00    

Conspiracy theories

  • The planes were swapped out for remote controlled
  • ones and the passengers were in on the plan.
  • George W. Bush was in on the attack
  • because he didn't take immediate action 
  • after he was informed

Conspiracy theories

  • They attacked  because they didn't have enough
  • military force to defeat the  U.S. military
  •  so they attacked historic and symbolic monuments
