Conditions grew worse. Many people did not have jobs and lived near starvation

FDR set up a variety of programs to provide employment and help relieve the suffering.

in the southern states, things were particularly tough because this area had not yet recovered from the Civil War.

Many people of the South considered African-Americans inferior and demanded segregation in the schools and on public transportation.

During the 1950’ -1960’s African Americans held a civil rights movement, demanding to be treated equally and not segregated based on the color of their skin.
