The first evidence of a "library" in Mesopotamia in 2600 BC

Even libraries in Nineveh as early as 700 bc had a classification system

Library science has its origins in early nineteenth century Germany, notably as bibliothekswissenschaft

The Dewey Decimal system, a means of classifying books was created by US librarian Melvil Dewey in the 1870s.

Library of Congress Classification System was created by Herbert Putnam in 1897.

During the late 1920s in Chicago a group of librarians requested a higher degree for those studying library science.

And what we know as the Masters of Library Science was started

Library Science is the study of libraries and their overall operation and admin.

Information Science is the field that focuses on the storing and transferring of information

Information Science

  • Intersects Library Science
  • Intersects Computer Science
  • As well as psychology, linguistics and many others.

Many Types of Librarians

  • School
  • Public
  • Academic
  • Special
  • So many new jobs being created every year.
