When did slavery first start?
8,000 BC: as long as cities have been around
How have most people gotten their slaves?
Most slaves throughout history have been war prisoners.
What kinds of jobs have slaves had throughout history?
farming (such as cotton in the United States), cooking, cleaning, building (in ancient Egypt slaves built the pyramids)
When did African slavery first start? Why did it start?
The 1400s (15th Century) when Europeans discovered the Americas. They found more land and wanted people to work it.
How did Europeans get African slaves?
African kingdoms were too powerful to be taken over by Europeans.
Powerful African nations took over and enslaved other Africans, then sold them to Europeans.
What were the three main cash crops that African slaves were forced to grow?
tobacco, sugar, and cotton
None of these things are necessary for life
What comes first? Racism or Slavery?
In order to sleep at night, slave owners needed to tell themselves that their slaves deserved it. Slave owners wanted to make money off slaves, and to do that they had to tell themselves they were better than their slaves.
