Haiku (quick facts)

  • Short, Japanese poem
  • 3 lines; in English 17 syllables
  • Typical: 5-7-5
  • Broken: any three combination that equals 17 syllables
  • Goal: Provide meaning via a "snapshot"

Terms to Remember

  • Imagery provides a sensory "snapshot"
  • Conflict (a necessary problem-- MvM; MvS; MvN; or MvSoc.)
  • Mood: the feeling/atmosphere of a scene

What to do:

  • Pick a prompt: 1 OR 2
  • One one side of your notecard: Find and cite 1 quote that addresses your prompt
  • On the other side: Construct a haiku that addresses your prompt
  • If stuck: TRY.
  • You may "borrow" words from the text for your haiku.
