BEGINNINGS

  • Was raised by her minister father who was also gay. 
  • Mother was a local school teacher.
  • Born as Martha Elizabeth Bray on March 11, 1964
  • Lived in Texas until she was 26 years old
  • Currently 50 years old.

She got a fake eye when she was eighteen because of a car accident. She says writing helped her recover from that.

DURING LIFE

  • Graduated from the University of Texas in Austin as a theater major. (1988)
  • Got married in Florence, Italy to her literary agent. (Barry Goldblatt)
  • Now lives in a New York apartment with two cats.
  • She won  the annual Michael L. Printz Award for Going Bovine.
