HISTORY IN "A PAINTED HOUSE" Mexican and Hill people come yearly to work in the cotton fields. They have to pick a certain amount of cotton each day. The owner of the farm pays them by giving them a place to stay and by each pound of cotton they pick.
In summer the value of cotton goes down and so cotton farmers have to pick more cotton. The immigrants have to pick as much cotton as they can so they can have enough money to take back to their families. When the flood comes all of the cotton is ruined and the immigrants have to go home without much money, and the farmer get deeper in debt.
I know what happened because I researched it and my research said that cotton picking began in late August and it was a very labor intensive crop. This is why most farmers had slaves,or payed immigrants to help harvest. The cotton bolls didn't open all at once, so it usually took three rounds of picking to get all the cotton. The cotton was measured by pounds. Most farmers in the 1950's picked cotton by hand although there were mechanical harvesters.
This book has caused me to gain a lot of respect for how my family and how they made a living. My great grandparents were cotton farmers in Georgia. The book really helped me imagine what life was like for them in the past.
When the hill people come to work on the Chandler's home they make fun of the unpainted, small house. The crippled boy named Trot defends the Chandler's. Trot is unable to work in the fields, so he decides to start painting the small farm house. Luke's mother had always wanted to have a painted house, but when she asked she was rejected by her in-laws. In their opinion there was no need for a painted house when they had to worry about the cotton and having enough money for planting the next crop.
